The origins of gospel music can be traced back to early 17th century Europe. Although the lyrics often preceded the music, decades passed before most tunes were standardized into the gospel songs that are now so familiar. The Morning Trumpet was composed by Benjamin Franklin White, and first published in The Sacred Harp, a shape-note hymnbook compiled by White and E.J. King, in 1844.
