The origins of gospel music can be traced back to early 17th century Europe. Although the lyrics often preceded the music, decades passed before most tunes were standardized into the gospel songs that are now so familiar. Another time-honored standard from The Sacred Harp (a shape-note hymn book, published in 1844), Saints Bound for Heaven is an energetic tune, drawing upon the rich folk traditions of the rural Southern United States.
