Gospel music is a classification of a particular category of Christian music. Black and Southern gospel are the most well-known gospel songs in the United States of America, their styles evolving out of African-American music and American folk music. The origins of gospel music can be traced back to early 17th century Europe. Although the lyrics often preceded the music, decades passed before most tunes were standardized into the gospel songs that are now so familiar. The five movements chosen here exemplify the beauty of these time-honored songs in original arrangements for horn quartet.
