The origins of gospel music can be traced back to early 17th century Europe. Although the lyrics often preceded the music, decades passed before most tunes were standardized into the gospel songs that are now so familiar. The earliest known versionof Down in the River to Pray was published in Slave Songs of the United States in 1867. It has often been used at outdoor baptisms (for obvious reasons).
