An Irish tune, "Brian Boru's March" is about the greatest of the Irish High Kings. With his army, Brian Boru defeated an alliance of Vikings at the battle of Clontarf (about 1013 A.D.), but was himself killed by the retreating vanquished soldiers. Beginning with rhythmic percussives (by the quartet members imitating bodhrán sound), a driving 6/8 march visualizes the field of battle.
